Overview of
Ground Source Energy
Geo thermal energy or Ground source energy exists throughout the UK. You do not
need to be in Volcanic regions to tap into geo thermal energy.
The ground temperature in the UK at a depth of 50 meters is a
constant 11-13C. This means that you have a constant source of energy which can
be used to heat buildings in winter and cool them in summer.
A ground source heat pump is a highly efficient engine that works on the
same principle as your fridge. Pipes are buried in the ground via long trenches
or a bore hole. These pipes extract the thermal energy and transfer it
via a heat exchanger to water which can heat your home. The standard systems
use under floor heating pipes which circulate hot water under the floor and
piped radiators for higher floors.
The heat pumps are powered by electricity which can be sourced from renewables
means.
Ground source heat pumps are a very efficient and environmentally friendly
source of energy. They can be implemented anywhere but the latest insulation
standard homes make these the most economical to implement.
